Matthew Rainwaters

Biography

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Matthew Rainwaters came to discover photography through skateboarding. Using the bulk of his 14 year old life savings he bought a video camera and started making short films and skate videos with his friends after school. Shortly before his eighteenth birthday he bought his first still camera and began shooting local punk bands for record labels. Falling in love with the darkroom process he decided to further his studies at the prestigious Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, but not before working in a special effects shop on the acclaimed artist Matthew Barney’s film, Cremaster 3. These experiences cemented Matthew Rainwaters’ love for both art and photography and has since worked simultaneously as a photographer, artist, and for three years as an arts educator. His work is included in the Washburn Mulvane Museum as well as numerous private collections and has been shown in galleries in Carmel, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and Austin.
