American Exposures $82.65 Photographs have the power to define and shape a community of people–for those who are revealed as well as for those who view them. Louis Kaplan addresses this phenomenon through a constellation of innovative essays that draw on the artistic renderings of national, ethnic, and global community. Spanning the twentieth century and profusely illustrated, American Exposures sheds light on a wide range of photographs, from Arthur Mole’s propagandistic living photographs of American icons and symbols to the exploration of contemporary subcultural communities by the Korean-born photographer and performance artist Nikki Lee, and asserts that the depiction of community is a central component to photography. Examining an eclectic collection of photographers, American Exposures deploys a number of critical concepts and theories developed by Jean-Luc Nancy in The Inoperative Community, as well as other philosophers, and applies them to the field of photography studies. Combining artistic and historical material with interdisciplinary theory, Kaplan moves beyond indexical thinking to demonstrate how an expository approach offers valuable resources with which to analyze visual communication. In doing so, he highlights the distinct powers of both community and photography as discourses of exposure. With an original approach to photography from Edward Steichen’s Family of Man exhibition to Pedro Meyer and the rise of the digital image, Kaplan points to a new way to think about the intimate relationship among photography, American life, and the artistic imagination. Louis Kaplan is associate professor of history and theory of photography and new media in the Graduate Department ofHistory of Art at the University of Toronto; he also coordinates the Visual Culture and Communication program at the University of Toronto at Mississauga. He is the author of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy: Biographical Writings. |

Attack the Gas Station $29.98 Four anarchistic, nihilistic youths run amuck in the streets and Attack The Gas Station! Lord Of The Flies-style social engineering quickly breaks out amongst the hostages as punk rockers pump petrol, gangsters are forced to rap, customer service becomes a fighting art and the gas station becomes a staging ground for an end-times battle between gangsters, punks and an army of moped-delivery boys. Director Kim Sang-Jin takes us into the world of the surreal where madness and mayhem rule. A dada poke in the eye to authority, this film either serves as a political parable about Korean society or, as a microcosm of Korean social problems or, alternately, just a hell of a lot of fun. |

Etched in Stone $23.09 This poignant, first-of-its-kind book celebrates words that define America’s storied past and symbolize the drive of its people–from the boardrooms of Manhattan to the farm fields of Iowa. Author Ryan Coonerty highlights profound phrases inscribed on 52 monuments and public sites. Some are famed monuments like the Lincoln Memorial; others are simple or stark places of honor, such as Angel Island, where immigrant Chinese scrawled their words on imprisoning walls. Etched In Stone unfolds the American saga from four perspectives. In Praise of Public Lives (Jefferson Memorial, Martin Luther King gravesite) celebrates leaders, thinkers, and innovators. Ordinary Heroes (Gettysburg Battlefield, Korean War Memorial, Memphis Firehouse) honors ordinary people who did extraordinary things. Bearing Witness (Salem Witchcraft Victims Memorial, Clayton Jackson McGhie Museum in Duluth) seeks to remind future generations of horrendous moments in history that must not be repeated, while A More Perfect Union (IBM School House, Dexter Gate at Harvard University, New York Public Library) reveals the promises of America–freedom and future. Stunning images by noted architectural photographer Carol Highsmith enhance the powerful messages and give each site a life and purpose beyond stone. The dramatic interplay of words and photographs makes this a beautiful gift book that will strongly appeal to all readers interested in American history, architecture, culture, and art. |
