The amount of technicians required depends on the capacity and the scale of the museum.

You also have the choice of becoming an art curator at the museum of your choice. But you are required to have a qualification in history or in particular Art History, to sign up for this position. If you don’t have the requisite qualifications though ; you can try getting a web degree for the same. The curator job profile also varies according to the dimensions of the museum and so, you’ll make an application for either helper curator or chief curator dependent on your ability and experience level.

The art museum education office staff is considered central to the successfulness of a fine humanities museum. A Bluestocking in Charleston: The Life and Career of Laura Bragg

A Bluestocking in Charleston: The Life and Career of Laura Bragg

$6.07

In early twentieth-century Charleston, Laura Bragg was called a woman ahead of her time, a fresh drink of water in a cultural desert — but never a proper Southern lady . Bragg was a Massachusetts-born bluestocking, a New Woman of the Progressive Era who changed not only the cultural face of Charleston but also the nation’s approach to museum education. In this biography of a most remarkable visionary, Louise Anderson Allen reveals how Bragg also achieved the objective of early feminists: full political, social, and economic equality on her own terms.Highlighting Bragg’s work with museums from 1909 to 1939, Allen examines the life and career of the first woman in the United States to lead a publicly supported museum — and the oldest such institution in the country — the Charleston Museum. Bragg used the facility to provide educational services to both black and white South Carolinians and broke new ground with her educational programs, including her revolutionary traveling exhibits, known as Bragg boxes . Earning national recognition for such efforts, Bragg made lasting contributions locally.Allen recounts how these achievements led Bragg back to her home state and specifically to Charleston in 1939, where she lived in relative isolation from the museum and art worlds she had so influenced for nearly forty years but remained influential in the city’s intellectual life. Summing up a noteworthy career, Allen describes Bragg’s efforts to mentor two generations of Charleston’s literati and assesses her vitalization of the city’s culture for close to seventy-five years.

A Civilized Traveller's Guide to Turin

A Civilized Traveller’s Guide to Turin

$6.63

Nestled between the Alps and the river Po in northwest Italy, Turin was hailed by Le Corbusier as the most beautifully-set city he’d ever seen. A Civilized Traveller’s Guide to Turin is a passionate and selective guide to the city, one willing to assume its reader is as interested in Turin’s illustrious history and culture as in its abundant food shops and museums. A city of more than a million people, Turin has a historic center that merges the Baroque and the Art Nouveau. The first capital of a united Italy, it is where Italo Calvino, Primo Levi and Cesare Pavese lived and wrote; and where partisan resistance overcame Fascist control and German occupation in the Second World War. Today Turin is as delightful a place to visit as more renowned (and more crowded) destinations in Italy. The guidebook includes such features as unique walking tours, a section on literary Turin, recommended day trips, ideas on what to do with kids, and recommendations of restaurants, shops, parks, etc, based on the author’s personal experience.

A Companion to Modern and Contemporary Art

A Companion to Modern and Contemporary Art

$40.75

In the early 1930s Henri van Abbe began to dream of building a center in Eindhoven where its people could be introduced to the mysteries of contemporary art–a place where they could enjoy art. In 1936 he realized this dream by donating to the city the Van Abbemuseum. Sixty years later, the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum has grown into one of the most prominent museums for modern art in the world, with a collection that includes works by modern masters such as Picasso, Braque, Chagall, Kandinsky, El Lissitzky, and Mondrian, as well as by contemporary artists like Douglas Gordon, Pierre Huyghe, Mike Kelley, and Marijke van Warmerdam. This publication of this first reference work on the Van Abbemuseum’s collection marks the opening of the museum’s new building in January 2003. A lavishly illustrated book, it offers detailed descriptions of the collection, the history of the museum, and its collecting policies. Each chapter examines a theme, such as De Stiji, CoBrA, conceptualism, and minimal art, and considers works from the collection in their historical context. Published in conjunction with Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven.

A Curious & Ingenious Art: Reflections on Daguerreotypes at Harvard

A Curious & Ingenious Art: Reflections on Daguerreotypes at Harvard

$63.81

Around the time Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre perfected his method for fixing images on polished metal plates in 1839, Harvard was emerging as a modern research institution. Accordingly, the college began amassing vast collections for teaching and research. Among these collections in the university’s libraries, museums, archives, and academic departments are some of the earliest photographic documents of American life: daguerreotypes.A Curious and Ingenious Art brings together a representative sampling of Harvard’s internationally significant but relatively unknown collection of daguerreotypes. Many of these images were made for, by, and of members of the university’s community and have been in its holdings for more than 150 years. The collection includes the work of some of America’s pioneering daguerreotypists, such as Mathew Brady, Southworth and Hawes, and John Adams Whipple. Most notably, the Harvard collection preserved for posterity such faces of the era as Oliver Wendell Holmes, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry James, James McNeill Whistler, Dorothea Dix, Jenny Lind, and even Tom Thumb. The university also seized upon photography as a tool of scientific research, stunningly exemplified in one of the first detailed daguerreotypes of the moon taken in 1851 as well as in images capturing the emergence of modern anesthesia. An unfortunate misuse of photography is recalled in the now famous slave daguerreotypes commissioned by natural historian Louis Agassiz, who believed in the theory of separate human species. The Harvard collection represents the early history of photography and its social meaning. The accompanying essays explore the personal, tellinghistories behind the images, stories that unveil the reflections of individuals who searched for purpose and promise in the new medium.

A Modern Patronage: de Menil Gifts to American and European Museums

$40

In the early 1940s, John and Dominique de Menil began to acquire art. Collecting in an intuitive and personal manner, the de Menils gathered things in which we believe, as John phrased it, and proceeded to develop an inspired collection that would eventually find a permanent home at The Menil Collection in Houston. In addition to building their own collection, the de Menils were committed to extending their vision to major museums in America and Europe. This beautifully illustrated book showcases some fifty works that the de Menils collected over the decades, including pieces by such major 20th-century artists as Lee Bontecou, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Rene Magritte, Jackson Pollock, Jean Tinguely, and Andy Warhol as well as an important group of African, Oceanic, and pre-Columbian works.Published on the 20th anniversary of the founding of The Menil Collection, the book reproduces and examines works held in that museum and gifts in the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris; the Museum of Modern Art in New York; and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. To complete the volume, the contributing authors examine the circumstances that inspired the de Menils’ collection and generosity, the relationships they developed with legendary museum directors, and the gifts that were selected for each museum.
