Using Calligraphy To Learn History and Art
At the present time, the calligraphy as an art form and hobby is widespread and lively. It is for personal messages, for representative entries in guest books or Golden books and in the design of instruments.
They are usually presented in document folders are used. Also greeting cards or place cards can be designed beautifully with the help of calligraphy individually and perfectly matched to the person and the occasion.
The history of calligraphy, however, stretches back over millennia. With the growing settlement of man developed in many places of the earth possibilities of written communication.
Already around 3500 BC, developed by the Sumerians, who lived between the Tigris and Euphrates, the cuneiform script, which was stamped with wedge-shaped stylus into clay tablets. The Mayas, Aztecs and the ancient Egyptians developed hieroglyphic writings.
The Greek font, from which arose in our Roman alphabet in common use today, originated among the Phoenicians. The Greek alphabet was already very similar to our present. It contained vowels and consonants.
In the area of present-day Italy, initially took and after them the Romans, the Greek alphabet. The Latin alphabet we still use today.
In medieval Europe, the calligraphy is the only known form was the transmission of literature. In the course of time developed into the so-called gothic script, a rudimentary, with a stern look. Calligraphy has been mainly used as an art form in the headlines and initials.
In remote monasteries, mostly incurred sacred works, fascinated by their complex and diverse equipment details.
The term comes from the Greek calligraphy. It is composed of the words “kallos” for beauty and “graphein” to write together and therefore means the art of beautiful writing by hand. The most common tools for this are feather quill pen or brush. It is written in ink or watercolor on handmade paper, vellum or colored cardboard. Often the writing is richly furnished with decorations.

A History of the Heart $6.07 My heart is a lonely hunter that hunts on a lonely hill. The heart has reason that reason cannot know. The more I get to know President Putin, the more I get to see his heart and soul. The heart not only drives our physical life, but throughout human history it has also been viewed at the seat of our deepest emotions. It has figured hugely–if metaphorically–in nearly every aspect of human civilization and as the unending subject of literature, music, and art. Yet until now there has not been a study of this paramount icon of love. Ole Hoystad ably fills this enormous gap with a fascinating investigation into this locus of grief, joy, and power. Firmly positioning the heart at the metaphorical and literal center of human culture and history, Hoystad weaves history, myth, and science together into a compelling narrative. He combs through religions and philosophies from the beginning of civilization to explore such disparate historical points as the Aztec ritual of removing the still-beating heart from a living sacrificial victim and offering it to the gods; homosexuality and the heart in Greek antiquity; European attempts to employ alchemy in service of the mysteries of love; and the connections between the heart and wisdom in Sufism. Hoystad charts how the heart has signified our essential desires, whether for love and passion in the medieval excesses of troubadour poetry and chivalric idealism, the body-soul dualism propounded by the Enlightenment, or even the modern notions of individualism expressed in the works of such thinkers as Nietzsche, Foucault, and Joseph Campbell. A provocative examination of the deepest vaults of our souls and the efforts of the many lonely hunterswho have tried to unlock its secrets, A History of Heart upends the cliches to reveal a symbol of our fundamental humanity whose beats can be felt in every aspect of our lives. |

Agaves of Continental North America $55 New in paperback Spring 2004, this is an indispensable guide to agaves. The uses of agaves are as many as the arts of man have found it convenient to devise. At least two races of man have invaded Agaveland during the last ten to fifteen thousand years, where, with the help of agaves, they contrived several successive civilizations. The region of greatest use development is Mesoamerica. Here the great genetic diversity in a genus rich in use potential came into the hands of several peoples who developed the main agricultural center of the Americas. Perhaps, as the Aztec legends suggest, it was the animals that first showed man the edibility of agave. Evolution in use ranges all the way from the coincidental and spurious, through tool and food-drink subsistence with mystical overlay, to the practical specialties of modem industry and art. The historic period of agave will be outlined here as briefly as that complicated development will allow. |
